Sustainability Action Network is preparing for hot and dry summers in Lawrence by hosting a workshop about protecting communities next to natural environments from wildfires.
Lawrence has seen consistent rain as of late, but locals should prepare for more widespread drought conditions, which increase wildfire risk, according to a news release from the organization.
“Our climate is changing, and the time to prepare for such a catastrophic contingency is today, not some far-off someday,” the event page reads.
The workshop will focus on the wildland-urban interface. WUI is where the natural environment meets with human developments, like homes and buildings.
“In this zone, wildfires can rapidly engulf subdivisions and even towns,” according to the event page.
Shawna Hartman, a wildfire prevention specialist with the Kansas Forest Service, will lead the workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 4 in the Flory Building at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St.
Hartman will cover household and community readiness plans, and attendees will learn about home defensible zones, fire-resistant building materials and more.
