Lawrence folks may need an afternoon nap ahead of Team Algeria’s second World Cup match, which will begin late Monday, but a street party will kick off at 5 p.m.
Algeria will face Jordan in a match starting at 10 p.m. Monday. The match will be held in San Francisco.
In their first matches, Jordan fell 3-1 to Austria, and Algeria lost 3-0 to Argentina.
Monday’s soccer celebration will kick off at 5 p.m. outside the Granada, 1020 Massachusetts St. It will feature Free State Samba, DJ Top Ranx, local vendors and concessions, and face painting, and it’s free to attend and open to all ages.

Free watch parties for the game, which starts at 10 p.m., will be at the Granada and at Lucia, 1016 Massachusetts St.
Team Algeria will return to Kansas City for the third group stage match, against Austria, set for 9 p.m. Saturday, June 27.

Free State Festival: ‘The Arab’ screening
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 22 at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St.
The arts center, in partnership with the library, will show “The Arab,” directed by Malek Bensmail, as part of its annual Free State Festival. Based on the novel “The Meursault Investigation” by Kamel Daoud, the film is about an old man from Oran, Algeria who says he’s the brother of “the Arab” killed in “The Stranger” by Camus. The screening is free to attend.

Free State Festival: ‘The Battle of Algiers’ screening
6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23 at the Lawrence Art Center, 940 New Hampshire St.
LAC will show “The Battle of Algiers” by Gillo Pontecorvo as part of its annual Free State Festival, alongside music and a panel. The film re-creates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s. Shot on the streets of Algiers in documentary style, it is a case study in modern warfare, with its terrorist attacks and the brutal techniques used to combat them. Tickets are $12.
Powwow on the Pitch
6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, June 24 at Haskell Powwow Grounds, 2552 W. Perimeter Road
Attendees can expect vendors, educational talks on regalia and dance history, and multiple categories of dance competition. The powwow will go from 6 to 10 p.m., but visitors can get there around 5 p.m. to visit vendors.
Lawrence Busker Festival presents Score Lawrence: USA vs. Turkey
Updated because of anticipated inclement weather:
4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 25 inside The Granada, 1020 Massachusetts New Hampshire St.;
and 9 to 11 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.
A free outdoor festival with a world-class international soccer freestyler doing tricks, music from VCMN, Ezgi Karakus and LYXE. Local vendors such as The Sunflower Market and OutLaws Jewelry. Food trucks will include Mama Doe Ice Cream Bar, QueenPins Taco Truck, Carnival Cravings, Hook & Que and Free State Beer.
“The entertainment lineup will perform onstage inside. A small number of vendors will be located in the building, while food vendors will remain outside,” according to an update from organizers.
“As planned, the USA vs. Turkey match at 9 p.m. will be shown inside the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St. The Granada will stream the game as well.”

Folks in Lawrence can join this walking tour of public art that celebrates the World Cup, from cut window graphics to sculptures to wearable public art for sale downtown. Read more about the artwork in this article.
“This year’s exhibition celebrates the spirit of the World Cup through six unique artworks, each offering a different creative perspective on public art and the world’s favorite game,” according to a city news release.
People who can’t attend the walking tour can view the art using the Otocast mobile app, available through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

A free outdoor festival with a world-class international soccer freestyler, music from Sad Cowboy Recording Co., Kat King, Rudy Love and the Encore and HEMBREE. There will be a food truck for Free State Beer.

‘The Boundless Game: Soccer Stories from Across the Street to Around the World’
3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 at Dole Institute of Politics, 2350 Petefish Drive
Tim Bascom, historian and author, will host a discussion on his new book, “The Boundless Game: Soccer Stories from Across the Street to Around the World.” The book explores “how soccer matters so much in our common, everyday lives, and how it brings the world closer together,” according to the Dole Institute. The event will be held in partnership with the University Press of Kansas.

The Lawrence Arts Center presents this free art exhibition celebrating the World Cup and infusing cultural diversity into the Midwest. Artists from around the country have designed their own “team jersey” as a welcome for international visitors.
