An upcoming event will seek to bring the community to the table for food and small group discussions to share experiences, ideas and hopes for Indigenous food systems.
The Indigenous Food Systems Study and Action Plan, developed by Indigenous leaders and knowledge-holders, will guide local policymakers in identifying gaps in access, preservation, and cultural support for Native foodways. The group working on the plan held a launch event in November.
The upcoming event, World Cafe, will kick off from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 with a welcome and complimentary meal prepared by The Native Chef, Jason Champagne.
After that will be a presentation and a World Cafe discussion until 7 p.m. The event will be held at Stidham Union at Haskell Indian Nations University.
“This event is open to the community! Please, invite your friends and family for a dinner and discussion (of) our Indigenous foodways, food systems, and good food,” organizers said via email.
Partners in the initiative include the HINU Extension Office, Native American Agriculture Fund, Kansas Health Foundation, Haskell, KU’s Office of Sovereign Partnerships & Indigenous Initiatives, the Douglas County Food Policy Council, and the county’s sustainability office.
