Two internationally recognized musicians with ties to KU will join for a free chamber music recital in Lawrence this weekend.
Cellist Edward Laut, a former KU faculty member, and internationally recognized pianist Soojin Jin will present the concert.
It is the Mid-America Performing Arts Alliance’s season opener. The performance begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Mississippi St.
The concert is free and open to the public. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and seating is first come, first served.
The program will include works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Anton Webern and Samuel Barber.
Jesse Henkensiefken, executive director of MAPAA, said the concert will feature the museum’s 1886 C. Bechstein grand piano, which is the instrument Franz Liszt played during his final grand tour of England.
Laut is a former cellist with the Cleveland Orchestra and has held principal cello positions with several ensembles. He taught at KU for 38 years, until his retirement in 2015.
Jin received her doctorate in piano performance at KU. She has performed internationally, including at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kauffman Center in Kansas City.
The Mid-America Performing Arts Alliance will hold a handful of other free concerts during its 2026-27 season, including holiday performances, violin and clarinet recitals and classical music performed in South Park. You can find more information on those performances at this link.
