City of Lawrence contractors have started work on 27th Street between Iowa and Louisiana Streets, changing Lawrence Transit bus routes and overlapping with Safe Routes to School for student pedestrians.

27th Street
Between Iowa and Louisiana streets:
City contractors have already started closing lanes on 27th Street between Iowa and Louisiana for 2026 street maintenance program work. Either an eastbound or westbound lane will be open at any time. The city recommends that drivers follow traffic control or plan different routes.
As part of the project, “27th Street will be fully resurfaced along with improvements for storm inlets, storm pipes, curbs, sidewalks, bus amenities, and ADA ramps,” according to a city release.
The work also impacts Lawrence Transit routes 7 and 11, which will avoid 27th Street construction. Learn more about the altered routes at this link.
Student pedestrians at Billy Mills Middle School, Schwegler Elementary and Lawrence High School should prepare for construction to intersect with their Safe Routes to School. There will always be a sidewalk open on one side of 27th throughout the work. There will also be crossing guards at 27th and Louisiana streets, as well as 27th Terrace and Louisiana Street for Billy Mills students.
Additionally, some Lawrence Transit schedule and route changes, as part of an annual review process, will take effect Saturday, Aug. 1. Read more about that in this article.
West of K-10:
City contractors will close 27th Street west of K-10 starting Monday, Aug. 3 to build a sanitary sewer. The work should wrap that same week.
“This work will impact access to the Youth Sports Complex and the Rotary Arboretum during businesses hours,” according to the release. “Crews will reopen 27th Street by 5:00 p.m. at the end of every day to allow access for evening activities at the Youth Sports Complex.”
Harper Street between 19th and 23rd streets
Contractors will work on Harper Street between 19th and 23rd for the street maintenance program starting Monday, Aug. 3.
According to the city, there will always be one southbound and one northbound lane open, with flagging crews to direct traffic around the work zone.
This construction should end the week of Monday, Aug. 10.
