9th Street in Lawrence will be open to traffic Thursday, city says

Crews will reopen Ninth Street from Mississippi to Louisiana streets the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 3, according to the city. Here’s the construction schedule for the next few weeks.

Parts of Ninth Street have been fully closed to traffic since December for the Jayhawk Watershed Project, addressing stormwater concerns in central Lawrence.

• Week of Monday, Aug. 31: Nick Hoyt, city engineer and project manager, estimates that the closure will end around 5 or 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Even after the street opens, crews will still do some construction, and the watershed project is not complete, according to a city news release.

Crews have completed major utility work on the street and will focus on paving, concrete restoration and traffic signal work before the opening this week. That work includes installing the sidewalk at the northeast corner of Ninth and Mississippi streets and installing pedestrian poles, push buttons and signal heads on Mississippi Street.

On Wednesday, Sept. 2, crews will remove the temporary parallel parking they created east of Louisiana Street. They will install temporary pavement markings on Thursday, creating one travel lane in each direction with a center turn lane.

Crews won’t work on Friday, Sept. 4, as the University of Kansas has its first football game of the season.

They will also be off for Labor Day weekend, from Saturday, Sept. 5 through Monday, Sept. 7.

Jacob Rice / Lawrence Times Construction continues outside of businesses on Ninth Street on Sept. 1, 2026.

• Week of Monday, Sept. 7: After returning to work on Tuesday, Sept. 8, following Labor Day, crews will have three days to work before the Friday, Sept. 11 KU game against the University of Missouri.

“Some minor sidewalk and curb work is expected during that time, but larger construction activities will wait until after the football weekend,” according to the release.

• Week of Monday, Sept. 14: Crews will focus on restoring pavement further east on Ninth, between Louisiana and Vermont streets. That could continue through the week of Monday, Sept. 21 if Ninth Street needs subgrade repairs.

The street will stay open, but motorists can expect lane shifts and temporary delays.

“North-south traffic on streets including Tennessee and Kentucky may experience short delays and medium-term closures of less than an hour at certain times,” according to the release.

• Other Ninth Street and Jayhawk Watershed work: All construction on Ninth Street should be completed this fall, according to the release.

That includes final pavement markings, installing protected bike lanes, improving signals at Tennessee and Kentucky streets and finishing sidewalk and curb repairs. The city will also restore private parking lots and alleys to the north and south of the street.

The Jayhawk Watershed Project is slated to be wrapped up by March. Read more about that work in the release at this link.
