Claire’s Community, a Lawrence nonprofit that aims to educate people about healthy relationships, will host events to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
First up, an annual gathering in South Park will invite people to come together for connection, conversation and resources.
“Join us for an engaging community Walk-a-Mile, explore local resources at our Resource Fair and Clothesline Project, enjoy inspiring speakers and live music, and close out the evening with a candlelight vigil,” according to the event page.
The gathering is set for 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11 at South Park in downtown Lawrence. The mile walk is set for 4 p.m., followed by the resource fair and clothesline project at 5, speakers and music at 6 and a candlelight vigil to close out the event at 6:45 p.m.
“This isn’t just an event for survivors or advocates. It’s for all of us,” according to the page. “Because creating safer relationships and stronger communities starts with recognizing the signs, knowing where to find help, and knowing how to support the people in our lives.”
Claire’s Community will also host “Timeline of a Tragedy: Would you recognize the signs?” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Building 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St.
The conversation will “explore what abuse can look like, how it can escalate, and the signs we should recognize before a situation becomes a tragedy.” It is intended for all ages.
“Because the question isn’t just, ‘Would you recognize the signs?’ It’s ‘What would you do if you did?'” the organization wrote in a Facebook post about the event.
