Phil Mitchell, a social studies teacher at Free State High School, has been selected as the new assistant principal and athletic director for Liberty Memorial Central Middle School, the school district announced Saturday.
Jenny Schmitt, current Pinckney Elementary principal who will fill LMCMS’s principal position next year, worked with a committee of teachers and staff to select Mitchell, according to the district’s news release.
Mitchell, who received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at KU, has taught social studies, government, European history and psychology courses this year and been at Free State for 15 years, according to the release. He’s been an assistant coach for cross country, girls basketball, and track and field.
“Free State High School has been a source of great happiness in my life,” Mitchell said in the release. “From my friendships with my colleagues to the relationships with students and athletes, the Firebird community has given me and my family incredible support. I am very honored to be selected for this new role and excited by the opportunity to join and support the LMCMS community.”
Mitchell’s new position will take effect July 1, pending school board approval. He replaces Brandy Taylor, who is taking a position in another school district at the end of the school year, according to the release.
“Mr. Mitchell has a wide range of experience as a teacher-leader, having served on multiple district committees and as department chair, and a wide range of athletic leadership, having 15+ years of coaching experience,” Schmitt said in the release.
