2 dogs killed in fire near Kansas River levee in Lawrence

Two dogs died in a fire Wednesday afternoon in a tent near the Kansas River levee in Lawrence, according to a news release from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.

An initial call to 911 reported dogs fighting and shots fired in a wooded area near the levee, according to the release.

Just after 2 p.m. Wednesday, LDCFM was dispatched when black smoke was seen coming from the area just south of the 700 block of Ash Street, according to the release.

LDCFM found a tent that had been destroyed by the fire.

A third dog escaped and was taken to a veterinary office for care, according to the release. No people were harmed.

“LDCFM is working this ongoing investigation to find the person or people responsible,” according to the release.
