A person was taken to the emergency room to be evaluated after a fire Wednesday morning in Lawrence.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were dispatched to a fire in the 3100 block of West 28th Circle at 6:50 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the department.

Crews extinguished a fire in the basement of the two-story, single-family home. The fire was under control around 7:20 a.m., according to the release.

Residents got out of the home safely, and there were no injuries to fire personnel, according to the release.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental because of an electrical event in the exhaust fan of the basement bathroom, according to the release.

“LDCFM wants to remind our community to have working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms installed throughout our homes,” the release stated. “These devices, escape plans, and closed doors truly make a difference.”
