Lawrence outdoor pool opens for summer season

Summer has officially come to Lawrence, as the outdoor aquatic center opened for the season Monday.

Lawrence’s indoor aquatic center has also switched to its shortened summer hours through July 24. The South Park Wading Pool will open next week, at 1 p.m. Monday, June 21.

Despite some initial concerns about adequate staffing for the outdoor centers given the still-present COVID-19 pandemic, the city didn’t have to push back its summer openings. Here’s everything you need to know:

Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Kentucky St.:

Hours:
Monday-Friday: 1-7:30 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 1-6 p.m.

Registration hours:
1-6 p.m. daily

Note: The water areas at all facilities close 15 minutes before closing, and waterslides and diving areas close 30 minutes before the facility. Admission is charged for everyone, including non-swimmers.

Cost:
Ages 3-17 and 60+: $5
Ages 18-59: $6

South Park Wading Pool, 1141 Massachusetts St.:

The wading pool will open next Monday, June 21, and close on Saturday, Aug. 14.

Hours:
Monday-Friday: 1-7 p.m.
Saturday: 1-6 p.m.
Sunday: Closed

Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive:

New summer hours for lap swimming only (through Saturday, July 24):
Monday-Friday: 6:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Sunday: Closed

There are currently no leisure pool swimming hours available at the Indoor Aquatic Center during the summer hours, but they may be added as staffing levels change.

The center will also be closed Sunday, July 25 – Sunday, Aug. 15, for its annual maintenance shutdown.

Non-summer hours at the Indoor Aquatic Center are 6:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m. on Monday-Friday, closed Saturday, and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.
