Officers were dispatched to the store shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday. It was reported that a person or people had broken a window at the store at 921 Massachusetts St., entered, and taken some items.

“An officer was already in the area investigating a separate business alarm when the officer observed the suspect fleeing the area northbound on a bicycle,” Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department said via email Sunday.

“The officers chased the suspect on foot and other officers responded to the area. The suspect was stopped and placed under arrest near 8th Street and Vermont Street. Officers located items believed to be stolen from 921 Massachusetts Street along the path traveled by the suspect,” Ernst said.

Officers were still on the scene around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, and one officer was seen sweeping broken glass on the sidewalk.

The Douglas County jail log late Saturday showed an arrest of a 30-year-old Lawrence man on suspicion of burglary, criminal damage to property and fleeing and eluding police. He was being held without bond as of 11 p.m. Saturday, jail records showed.

Police will prepare an affidavit for the district attorney to consider charges, Ernst said.
