“Driver impairment is being investigated as a contributing factor of the accident. The department’s Accident Investigation Unit is currently investigating the accident,” Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department said via email Saturday morning.

The crash was reported around 12:15 a.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of West Sixth Street. That’s just west of Iowa Street, near Sixth Street and Rockledge Road.

“Preliminary information suggests a westbound vehicle went left of center and struck an eastbound vehicle,” Ernst said.

The driver of the westbound vehicle was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for what were believed to be minor injuries, Ernst said; three occupants of the eastbound vehicle suffered what appeared to be serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals by ambulance.

The person who died was one of the three occupants of the eastbound vehicle, Ernst said Saturday afternoon.
