Human remains found southeast of Lawrence, sheriff’s office says

Human remains were found Monday afternoon southeast of Lawrence and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, according to a news release.

People walking in the 1700 block of North 1250 Road “noticed the remains near a creek and alerted the Sheriff’s Office,” according to the release.

“Responding deputies and detectives confirmed the remains were human, and they searched the area and located additional bones near the water,” the release stated.

“Deputies as part of the investigation are working to identify the remains, and a forensic anthropologist is assisting in the investigation,” the release continued. “No additional information is available at this time due to the ongoing investigation.”

This map shows the approximate location where the remains were found. The area is south of Kansas Highway 10 between the interchanges at East 23rd Street and Haskell Avenue:
