Parking in the New Hampshire Street garage will be free for the remainder of this week — except for the garage’s lower level, which is closed until further notice following a nearby fire.
“An early-morning fire in the alley behind the garage activated the automatic sprinkler system on the lower level of the garage; now, the system on the lower level is frozen and out of service due to the cold,” according to a news release from the city.
“The City is contacting anyone currently parked on the lower level of the garage and asking them to move their vehicle to any other level as soon as possible due to safety concerns,” the release continued.
An Ottawa man was arrested on suspicion of arson early Monday after he contacted a police officer in the 100 block of East 10th Street and admitted to starting a dumpster fire earlier in the night, Sgt. Drew Fennelly said via email Monday morning.
The fire protection systems for the other floors of the parking garage in the 900 block of New Hampshire Street are working, according to the city’s release, and parking there will be free for the rest of the week.
“The City appreciates the community’s cooperation as staff works to resolve this issue,” the release concluded.
