The City of Lawrence will soon begin work on several projects along Sixth Street that will require some road and lane closures starting Monday, Feb. 5.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane between Louisiana and Massachusetts streets, and westbound Sixth Street will also be reduced to one lane from Michigan Street to Maine Street.
Kentucky Street will be closed at Sixth Street, and there will be no turning left onto southbound Tennessee Street from westbound Sixth Street.
Beginning in late February, Sixth Street will also be reduced to one lane each direction from Maine Street to Florida Street.
The projects “will greatly improve the road and driving experience for residents and visitors,” according to a recent news release from the city. “6th St. was last repaved more than 10 years ago, and this substantial investment in our City’s infrastructure is essential to prevent further road deterioration and impacts to traffic.”
One of the projects will include full-depth patching, curb and gutter work and storm sewer upgrades, according to the release. Crews will also install more than 3,000 feet of new waterline infrastructure and an accessible shared-use path on the north side of Sixth Street between Iowa and Wisconsin streets, according to the release.
The city anticipates the work on this portion of Sixth Street will conclude in the fall, according to the release.
“While impacts will vary during the different project phases, crews will always maintain at least one lane of traffic in each direction on 6th St. for the duration of the projects,” according to the release. “Detour signs will be installed to better help travelers navigate the area.”
Future work will take place further west on Sixth Street.
