Mike Gillman, current assistant principal and athletic director for Lawrence High School, has been selected to fill the role of associate principal, according to a news release from the school district.

Gillman joined the district in 2005 as a paraeducator at Prairie Park Elementary, then taught social studies and English language arts for 10 years at West Middle School and history for three years at Free State High School, according to the release. He also coached track, wrestling and football at WMS and Free State, earning league and regional coaching honors, according to the release.

“Lawrence Public Schools has provided me and my family with a great opportunity to continue my passion for leading students and staff,” Gillman said in the release. “I am grateful for the chance to continue supporting the Chesty Lions and the Lawrence community.”

Gillman earned his bachelor’s degree from Haskell Indian Nations University and two master’s degrees from Baker University, according to the release.

Gillman will fill the role vacated by Mark Preut, who will be the next principal of the Lawrence College and Career Center and Academy, Adult Education Services, and Alternative Programs.

“Mike Gillman epitomizes the core values and principles of a Chesty Lion, demonstrating unwavering commitment to all students and exhibiting exceptional leadership qualities toward maintaining a positive learning environment for students and staff,” LHS Principal Quentin Rials said in the release. “His dedication to fostering a supportive academic and social culture have contributed to the success of LHS in a significant way.”

Gillman’s new position is effective July 1, pending school board approval.
