Two families have been displaced from their homes following a fire in the Prairie Park neighborhood early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched to a house fire in the 2800 block of Lankford Drive, which is near East 28th Street and O’Connell Road, at 4:50 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.

A police officer who arrived at the scene found that the fire had spread from one home to the neighboring structure, according to the release.

There were no injuries to occupants of the homes or fire personnel. Two cats were given oxygen at the scene after firefighters removed them from one of the homes.

The American Red Cross will assist the displaced families with temporary housing, according to the release.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of 11 a.m. Sunday.

“LDCFM reminds the community of the importance of having a home evacuation plan that has been practiced by all residents,” according to the release.
