Lawrence streets coated with ice; here are closures and cancellations for the weekend of Jan. 4-5, 2025

Multiple crashes had already been reported Saturday afternoon as ice began to coat the streets of Lawrence. We’ll post closures and cancellations for Saturday and Sunday events and locations that are sent to us here.

The South Lawrence Trafficway (Kansas Highway 10) was shut down near the Clinton Parkway exit for an injury crash as of 2 p.m. Saturday, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Further details were not yet available at the time of this post.

A Times reporter who attempted to go out for a household essential was fishtailing going just 10-15 mph around 2 p.m. Saturday in southern Lawrence.

More freezing rain and sleet are on the way, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka. Liquid precipitation will transition into sleet overnight. Snow is expected in Lawrence between 6 and 9 a.m. Sunday, meteorologist Nathan Griesemer said, and NWS now expects 5 to 8 inches to accumulate. (Read more about the weather forecast at this link.)

Public service closures and cancellations:

Lawrence Transit has canceled all service, including priority routes, from 3 p.m. Saturday through Monday morning, Jan. 6. (More info at this link.)

Lawrence City Hall and parks and recreation facilities will be closed Monday because of inclement weather and dangerous travel conditions. Recreational facilities will also be closed Sunday. (Read more at this link.)

Solid waste service in Lawrence will be delayed by one day all week. (Read more at this link.)

The airfield at Kansas City International Airport is closed as of 2:50 p.m. Saturday. Those with flights should check with their airlines for specific information.

Greyhound bus service will be suspended from 6 p.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, in Kansas and Missouri.

Amtrak’s Southwest Chief Train 3 (operating between Los Angeles and Chicago) is canceled Saturday with no alternative transportation being offered.

Lawrence Public Library closed at 4 p.m. Saturday and remain closed Sunday.

The Lawrence Arts Center closed at 5 p.m. Saturday and will remain closed Sunday.

Lawrence Humane Society closed at 3 p.m. Saturday and will remain closed Sunday.

Spencer Museum of Art will be closed Sunday.

Eudora Community Center will be closed Sunday and reopen Monday.

LINK, the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, is closed Sunday and will resume serving meals Tuesday.

VFW Post 852 in Lawrence will be closed Sunday.

LMH Health Primary Care South Iowa Street is closed Sunday.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed all highways in northeastern Kansas as of shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday.

Trinity Lutheran Church will not have in-person services but will livestream at its usual time

Lawrence police tweeted this image around 2 p.m. Saturday with a note that “Ice is starting to cover the cameras we use to monitor traffic conditions, so you can imagine what this does to the tires on your Corolla.”
