Two occupants and pets that were in a North Lawrence house fire Friday afternoon are safe and a firefighter suffered a “minor injury,” according to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.
Firefighters were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. Friday to a home in the 800 block of Elm Street in North Lawrence. The back porch and the kitchen of the one-story home were on fire, according to a news release from LDCFM.
Two people had evacuated from the home, but there were still pets inside.
Nearly two dozen firefighters responded. As some worked to extinguish the flames, others searched the house and saved the pets.
“LDCFM crews provided care, including oxygen, to some of the pets,” according to the release. The Lawrence Humane Society gave the pets further assistance.
“There was one reported minor injury to a firefighter, and no injuries were reported from the residents,” according to the release. “American Red Cross was contacted and is currently assisting the residents.”
The release did not elaborate on the nature of the firefighter’s injury.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of 7 p.m. Friday.
