Students graduating from the Community Transition program in Lawrence were praised for their perseverance and resilience this year.
Six students graduated in the Class of 2025, according to Lacy Davison, C-Tran special education teacher. Five were recognized during a ceremony Thursday morning at Community Connections at Pinckney.
Davison shared qualities she loves most in each of them: Charlie Burk’s, or “Orange C’s,” big smile, humor, love of vintage items and bravery; Kenny Burk’s adaptability and knowledge of the city bus system, along with his comedic side; Elizabeth Heinz being kind, funny and smart, and reminding everyone when their birthdays are; Davalin “DJ” James having built genuine friendships through accepting others; and Max Owens’s “epic dance moves” and hard work to advocate for himself.
C-Tran, within the Lawrence school district, helps young adults ages 18-21 with disabilities gain vocational skills and independent living, and to transition from school to adult life. Three students from the program will move on to Project SEARCH, another district program offering job training through internships, in the fall.
Jenna Viscomi, administrator at Community Connections at Pinckney, said she’s proud of the way graduates navigated challenges throughout the year. She encouraged them to pursue their passions.
“Remember that independence is not about doing everything alone,” Viscomi told graduates. “It’s about making choices that align with your goals and values. It’s about seeking support when needed and offering it in return.”
Classmates expressed individual messages and well wishes for each graduate in a video shown to the audience. After the ceremony, graduates and supporters celebrated with cake and refreshments.
