A 70-year-old woman was killed overnight in Lawrence, and her grandson is suspected of killing her, according to police.
Lawrence police were dispatched to a home southwest of Clinton Parkway and Crestline Drive around 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release.
The woman’s grandson allegedly confessed over the phone to dispatch that he had strangled her, according to the release.
Officers found the woman unresponsive in bed, and she was declared dead at the scene, according to the release.
Marcus Cassella, 25, of Lawrence, was booked into the Douglas County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. As of Saturday morning, he was being held without bond.
Cassella’s 24-year-old brother was “unharmed in a bedroom with the door shut,” according to the release. He was working Saturday morning to notify extended family, according to the release.
All arrestees and defendants in criminal cases should be presumed not guilty unless they’re convicted.
