Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.
Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.
Luna, a pit bull and Labrador mix, is a friend to all and enemy to none. Not only does she love humans, but she can live with other dogs, cats and children.
The shelter took 6-year-old Luna and another dog she had lived with as owner surrenders six weeks ago. The other dog was adopted and Luna has been in foster care for the last two weeks.
All reports point to Luna being a wonderfully dignified houseguest as she stays in a home with two cats and a preteen.

“She doesn’t chase the cats, allows them to swat at her, and sleeps in the same bedroom as them,” said Elina Alterman, chief development officer at LHS. “She plays with the foster’s daughter and is very gentle with her, even being mindful not to jump on her or tackle her when running around and having zoomies.”
Luna is big on playing chase and wrestling with other dogs, and would thrive with a playful canine sibling. She’s not all rough and tumble, though. Luna also adores a snuggle with her foster parents and can always go for a belly rub. As a bonus, she’s treat-motivated and easy to train — she already knows “sit” and “shake.”
Mass Street Mutts volunteers took her for hikes, walks and pup cups before she went into a foster home.
“Luna was the best dog I have ever been around!” one volunteer wrote. “She was super sweet and seemed decently trained. She listens really well and was overall amazing! She loved hiking and cuddling afterwards.”
Luna doesn’t need to be crated because she is nondestructive when left home alone. She gets anxious when she is crated.
Luna is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $150. Potential adopters can email to [email protected] or call the shelter at 785-843-6835 to arrange a meeting.
