Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.
Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.
Trigonometry may not be a math whiz like his name suggests, but this 8-year-old pit bull mix is still a smart cookie.
Shelter staff members have been sending him on all of the Mass Street Mutts outings that his little legs can handle so he can share his know-how.

“He’s had a great time hanging out in several fraternity and sorority houses, imparting his wisdom on the young KU students,” said Elina Alterman, chief development officer at LHS.

Trig was surrendered to the shelter with another dog in January because his owner was moving. He’s been at the shelter for three months, waiting for a foster or adopter.
“He is the cutest, happiest guy with a Hollywood grin and walks with the sweetest little waddle,” Alterman wrote via email.

She thinks he would be a great first dog for a new foster parent since he’s easygoing and a “pocket pittie” at only 45 pounds.
On Mass Street Mutts adventures, Trig has fallen in love with Lucky Dog and lounging on patios. He especially gravitates towards Red Lyon Tavern, as he enjoys watching sports with balls. Volunteers consistently report that he’s the sweetest, most loving little guy around.
“As an 8 year old pittie, he has the best energy level – playful and eager to go out on a walk, but then super chill at home, ready to snooze on the couch or a cushy dog bed,” Alterman wrote.

Although he lived with another dog his whole life, they were not bonded, and he would be perfectly content as the solo dog in the house. He’d also do well with a doggy roommate who’s down to coexist. Shelter staff will facilitate any introductions between potential dog siblings and Trig.
Staff think he shouldn’t live with cats since he’s shown an interest in chasing them. He hasn’t lived with children, but has been gentle and given tots their space when he meets them on outings.

“We would LOVE to find him a home that will love him, dote on him, and make sure that he doesn’t grow old in an animal shelter when his true place is on someone’s couch!” Alterman wrote.
Trig is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. His adoption fee is $75.
