Bus stops along Massachusetts Street in Lawrence will soon see improvements, thanks to a $50,000 grant the city has received.
The transit stop upgrades will be part of the Massachusetts Street Multimodal Improvements project in which Mass Street between 14th and 23rd streets will be redesigned.
The project is to reconfigure the 1-mile stretch of Mass, which currently has four lanes, into three traffic lanes with separated bike lanes on both sides of the street. It will also include accessibility improvements to sidewalks and ramps.
Funding for the bus stop improvements comes from a Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, according to a city announcement.
“The funding will help advance improvements along the project corridor designed to better support people using public transit in conjunction with the City project that supports a safer corridor for people using all modes of transportation including transportation alternatives,” according to the announcement.
The city began community engagement for the project back in 2023. According to a timeline on the city’s project website, construction will start this fall and continue into 2027.
