Lawrence Humane Pet of the Week: Bob is a loving low rider, social butterfly

Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.

Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.

Bob, a 1-year-old pit bull mix, is “truly as perfect as they come,” according to shelter staff.

“He is fantastic with male and female dogs, dogs of all sizes, large groups of dogs – just any dogs that want to play!” wrote Elina Alterman, the Lawrence Humane Society’s chief development officer.

Bob would do best in a home with one or several doggy siblings, or with a human who will take him to playdates at the dog park or daycare.

Animal control dropped this 60-pound low rider off at the shelter three months ago. He was adopted for a couple of weeks, but it didn’t stick through no fault of his own, according to staff.

His former adopters reported that he’s house-, potty- and kennel-trained. However, he doesn’t need to be kenneled because he can hang out without his humans without being destructive.

The former adopters wrote that Bob is friendly, cheerful and full of kisses.

“He loves to play tug of war, will take any opportunity to sit in your lap, he loves cheese and LOVES ice,” they wrote. “Enjoys car rides, and endearingly snorts/snores a lot. He is the sweetest cuddle buddy. He will get bursts of energy where he will want to play, but they are short lived as he will then be ready for a nap again.”

Bob also has a penchant for outdoor romps and sunbathing. Mass Street Mutts volunteers wrote that he’s a pro at splooting in downtown shops and is a social butterfly who loves meeting humans.

“Bob is literally AMAZING!!!! I have 3 dogs and he walks better than all of them!” they wrote.

The shelter doesn’t know how Bob does with cats, but he’s been gentle with kids of all ages on Mass Street Mutts adventures.

Bob is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. His adoption fee, which is typically $150, is discounted to $51 through Sunday, May 10 as part of the shelter’s Be Kind to Animals Week. All adult dogs who are 6 months or older have $51 adoption fees during this period.

Potential adopters can email to [email protected] or call the shelter at 785-843-6835 to arrange a meeting.
