Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.
Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.
Axel, a 5-year-old mixed retriever and American Bulldog, thinks he’s a lapdog, and no one is telling that good boy otherwise.
Axel arrived at the shelter in January and was placed with one of their more experienced fosters, who said he “has been the best boy.”
“While he’s just a little on the older side, that just means you get the best of both worlds, he’s past the puppy chaos but still has plenty of love and life to share,” the foster wrote to the shelter. “This sweet boy has a calm, easygoing personality that makes him an instant favorite.”

The foster reports that he is dog- and kid-friendly, and will fit smoothly into so many homes since he’s potty-trained and almost trained for the kennel. Not that he needs it, since he’s not destructive if he’s left out. He sleeps through the night and may bark early in the morning, but moving the kennel to the bedroom remedied that.
“He’s eager to please, listens well and thrives with gentle guidance and consistency,” the foster wrote.
She also said he’s a playful guy who will tackle toys by himself or invite his human to join in on the fun. Also, he can always go for an exhilarating car ride.
Axel does get along with the foster’s other dog but isn’t fond of seeing fellow canines on walks, so he should meet any possible dog siblings. However, the foster has reported that he’s making huge strides with leash training.
Axel is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. His adoption fee is $150.
