Lawrence community members can cheer for Team Algeria during the final group stage match at a downtown watch party Saturday evening.
The party starts at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27 in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street, in front of the Granada. The watch party, which will feature Algeria’s match against Austria, starts at 9 p.m.
Attendees can expect “an evening of live music, entertainment, and a local vendor market,” according to organizers. The Algeria vs. Austria and Jordan vs. Argentina matches will be shown on a 20-foot screen under the stars.
“Saturday’s street party includes traditional Arabic music from Bayati plus DJ Jalapeño and the Grupo Folklorico del Sol dancers before the Algeria match,” according to the Granada.
The celebration is free to attend and open to all ages.

Saturday’s match will be held in Kansas City. It will determine second and third place in Group J.
Team Algeria, which has its base camp in Lawrence, is 1-1 so far in the group stage, falling 3-0 to defending champions Argentina but winning 2-1 over Jordan. It was Algeria’s first victory in a World Cup match since 2014. The team could still advance to the round of 32.
Austria topped Jordan 3-1 but fell 2-0 to Argentina.

“This year’s exhibition celebrates the spirit of the World Cup through six unique artworks, each offering a different creative perspective on public art and the world’s favorite game,” according to a city news release.
People who can’t attend the walking tour can view the art using the Otocast mobile app, available through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Lawrence community members are invited to wear green, white or red and come create a living Algerian flag at Stan Herd’s latest earthwork.
Lawrence Busker Festival presents Score Lawrence: Quarterfinal game
3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 11 at South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St.
A free outdoor festival with a world-class international soccer freestyler, music from Sad Cowboy Recording Co., Kat King, Rudy Love and the Encore and HEMBREE. There will be a food truck for Free State Beer.
At 8 p.m., the event moves to Maceli’s, 1031 New Hampshire St., for the official viewing party of the quarterfinal game. Teams are still TBD. Find more information about the agenda at this link and access the event map here.
‘The Boundless Game: Soccer Stories from Across the Street to Around the World’
3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 at Dole Institute of Politics, 2350 Petefish Drive
Tim Bascom, historian and author, will host a discussion on his new book, “The Boundless Game: Soccer Stories from Across the Street to Around the World.” The book explores “how soccer matters so much in our common, everyday lives, and how it brings the world closer together,” according to the Dole Institute. The event will be held in partnership with the University Press of Kansas.

The Lawrence Arts Center presents this free art exhibition celebrating the World Cup and infusing cultural diversity into the Midwest. Artists from around the country have designed their own “team jersey” as a welcome for international visitors.
