Paper Plains Zine Fest is coming back for a fifth year of self-published creativity, community workshops and Jammy, the printer mascot.
Paper Plains is the annual celebration of zines and zine culture in Lawrence.
“Zines,” short for “fanzines,” are self-published booklets, according to a news release from the festival’s organizing committee.
“For as long as printing technology has existed, people outside mainstream culture — either due to systemic oppression or by choice — have been using printed media to give voice and agency to their ideas and experiences. Zines inform, inspire, and instruct,” the release reads.

This year’s event will feature three full days of events from Friday, Sept. 4 through Sunday, Sept. 6. All events are free, but some programs require advance registration.
“The zinesters at Paper Plains Zine Fest are individuals who believe in the joy and power of sharing what’s on our hearts and minds,” Rachel Gibson, a Lawrence artist and planning committee member, said in the release. “If you’re fortunate enough to be in that same space, it’s hard not to share their passion.”
Here are some things to expect from the fifth Paper Plains:
• Day 1, Friday, Sept. 4, will include zine-collecting and printmaking programming, including a tour of the Spencer Research Library Zine collection at 10 a.m. The library is located at 1450 Poplar Lane.
The University of Kansas Colorbar Open Studio will also host two sessions with tours of the student-run risograph lab and opportunities for attendees to make their own prints. Those sessions are at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and registration is required.

• Day 2, Saturday, will be full of workshops, panels and artist talks at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St., including a kids’ mini-zine workshop, a collaborative teen zine session, and bookbinding and poetry workshops.
There will also be a Zine Club panel and a cyanotype workshop, which requires registration, for people of all experience levels.

• Day 3, Sunday, includes the popular vendor fair from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Van Go, 715 New Jersey St.
More than 150 local and regional artists will sell zines, comics, chapbooks, pamphlets and other goodies, generally priced from $1 to $15. Many artists will accept credit card or non-cash payment methods, per the release.
The fair will welcome “BIPOC, woman/femme, LGBTQIA+, and youth zine-makers as well as zinesters with disabilities,” the release reads. Learn more at this link.
