Organizers expect this year’s Haskell Indian Art Market to bring more than 130 exhibitors sharing traditional foods, beadwork, jewelry, clothing and more.
The annual two-day event is scheduled this year for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 on Haskell campus’s Powwow Grounds, 2535 W. Perimeter Road. The market is free and open to the public.
This year, the market will also have artist demonstrations and live entertainment.
The market has connected the Haskell, Lawrence and nationwide Native artist community since it began in 1987 as the Lawrence Indian Art Show.
“While the event is a supportive environment for Native American artists to share their art, it’s also an opportunity for cross-cultural understanding and exchange,” according to the event page. “Additionally, the market provides Haskell with a chance to showcase students and staff, as they work the event as exhibitors, dancers, and help keep the market running smoothly as they welcome community members to campus.”
The event also helps student clubs to fundraise for the year, offsetting costs like conference travel and workshops.
Service dogs are welcome, but other pets, drugs and alcohol are not allowed at the event. The Powwow Grounds are an outdoor, grassy area.
