“Chasing Nirvana,” a grungy, Gen X-inspired musical made by a Lawrence artist, will soon take to the Theatre Lawrence stage.
Written by Lawrence creative Anj Marie Riffel, the show boasts a 1990s alternative rock soundtrack, a lead female alto named Presley, and a full backing band.
“Packed with heart, humor, and a healthy dose of pop-culture wisdom, we follow Presley’s journey as she navigates a Bermuda love triangle and risks losing herself in the void between two very different dreams,” a theatre press release reads. “Will she find her own sense of nirvana?”
“Chasing Nirvana” is funded by the Louise ImMasche Striving Artist Project, named in honor of a Theatre Lawrence star who died last year.

“If you were gonna just walk into a dive bar in the 90s, (this is) kind of what you would see on the stage, and it might be a little rough around the edges, and that’s OK,” Riffel said during an August interview. “I hope that it has heart.”

Presley and cast will storm the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 3 at the theater, 4660 Bauer Farm Drive.
