The shooting was reported around 7:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of Kentucky Street.

Officers found the injured man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. First responders had requested an air ambulance but canceled it.

“Personnel from the Investigations Division responded to the scene and are working to identify and locate who was involved in the incident,” Lt. David Ernst said via email Wednesday night.

Investigators were also still working to identify the victim as of 10:17 p.m. Wednesday, Ernst said.

Police were looking for a maroon Pontiac G6 with damage to its front bumper, they said over the scanner around 7:53 p.m. Officers did not believe the registered owner of the vehicle was in it when it left the scene of the reported shooting. Around 8:15 p.m., officers had a vehicle they believed they were looking for stopped at the intersection of 23rd and Massachusetts streets, scanner traffic indicated.

“Anyone with information is encouraged to call our Investigations Division at 785-830-7430 or call Crime Stoppers at 785-843-TIPS. Tips to Crime Stoppers are anonymous,” Ernst said.
