A 2-year-old child has died after being shot Friday morning in Lawrence, according to police.

Police were called to the 1500 block of Wedgwood Drive around 10:45 a.m. Friday, according to information from Lt. David Ernst.

First responders found the child critically injured from an apparent gunshot wound, Ernst said; the child was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital but did not survive.

“Officers and detectives are currently speaking with the parties involved in the incident and preliminary information suggests the shooting was accidental,” Ernst said via email Friday afternoon. “This incident currently remains under investigation.”
