Julie Henry has been selected as director of nutrition and wellness for the Lawrence school district, according to an announcement Monday.

Henry is currently completing her fourth year as assistant director of child nutrition and wellness for the Kansas State Department of Education and previously served KSDE as a technology and training specialist and a child nutrition consultant, according to the release.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve my hometown in this role,” Henry said in the release. “Having access to safe, nutritious, and delicious meals is vital to students’ learning, growth, and development. I look forward to working with the dedicated school nutrition professionals across the district to support students.”

The position is fully funded by Food Service, according to the release. District spokesperson Julie Boyle said the assistant director of nutrition and wellness has resigned, and Food Service is making that a director position.

“We are excited that Julie will join the Nutrition and Wellness Department,” Paula Murrish, executive director of district services, said in the release. “Her professional career experiences will enable her to support the district’s goal to provide high quality nutrition and wellness programs and nutritious meals to support and enhance the learning process. By fostering nutritious eating habits, our students will be prepared for healthier lifestyles.”

Henry’s position will be effective July 1. The school board approved her hiring as part of a personnel report at its Monday meeting.
