A nonpartisan panel will aim to educate voters about two constitutional amendments that would “shift the balance of power in the state” if they pass in the Nov. 8 election, according to an event flyer.
The first amendment on the ballot would allow the Kansas Legislature to overturn administrative agencies’ decisions with a simple majority vote. The second would require election of county sheriffs, and it would give the power to initiate the recall of county sheriffs to the state attorney general rather than local county and district attorneys. The panelists will be Amii Castle, who teaches at the University of Kansas schools of law and business, and Emily Depew, a third-year KU law student. The moderators will be KU students Saihaj Parmar and Faith Lopez, according to a news release from organizers.
The event is set for 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 in the Jayhawk Room at the Kansas Memorial Union. The event will also be livestreamed. Register to view the livestream at this link.
The panel is sponsored by several groups: League of Women Voters of Lawrence-Douglas County; Loud Light; Kansas Interfaith Action; Mainstream Coalition; League of Women Voters of Johnson County; and League of Women Voters of Wichita-Metro, according to the release.
