For the third consecutive year, the City of Lawrence is partnering with Teknix Solutions for an Electronics Recycling Event, which is open to Lawrence and Douglas County residents seeking to dispose of unwanted electronics.
Residents can drop off their electronic waste on the east side of Free State High School, accessible from Overland Drive, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21. The city asks that attendees remain in their vehicles throughout the event.
“Recycling electronics keeps harmful materials out of the landfill and gives valuable components a second life — making it a win for your home and the planet,” according to a city newsletter announcing the event.
The 2024 event brought in 1,080 cars dropping off 83,860 pounds of waste, per a city YouTube video. This was a significant increase over the 66,480 pounds recycled at the 2023 event.
Residents are encouraged to “bring items like laptops, desktops, printers, phones, small appliances, TVs, monitors, cables and more” in a newsletter from the city. Professionals with Teknix Solutions will ensure personal data is “securely destroyed or wiped” from these devices.
There will be fees for recycling certain TVs and monitors, which can be found here. Fees are payable in cash, or by PayPal or Venmo.
All other eligible items are free to recycle at the event, but certain materials will not be accepted, including DVDs, light bulbs, household batteries, and more. See the full list of acceptable and ineligible items here.
For those who can’t make it on June 21, the city’s recyclable materials directory helps residents locate where to recycle e-waste year-round. Additionally, the city recommends dropping off certain electronics at the Lawrence Goodwill or Best Buy. Find more information about these options at this link.
