A Democratic candidate for Kansas governor as well as candidates for Lawrence City Commission and Lawrence school board will speak at the Douglas County Democrats’ annual pie auction this weekend.

The event is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 22 in the Flory Building at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St.

Gubernatorial candidate Cindy Holscher, an Overland Park Democrat who is currently the senator for Kansas District 8, will speak with voters at the event. So will “potential statewide candidates” Chris Mann and Christy Davis, according to a news release from the party. Statewide elections will next be held in 2026.

City elections are nonpartisan, but the local Democratic party often hosts candidate forums that are open to the community. Read more about the Lawrence City Commission candidates in this article, and more about the Lawrence school board candidates in this article.

The pie auction will feature “special artisan pies,” according to the release, and individual slices will be available for a $5 donation each. There’s no charge to enter, and drinks are free.

Proceeds from the auction will go toward hiring staff, according to the release.

There will be a primary election to narrow the field of city commission candidates on Tuesday, Aug. 5. The final day to register to vote or update your voter registration for the primary election is Tuesday, July 15. Douglas County voters can register quickly and/or request a mail ballot online at KSVotes.org.
