A free event on fraud prevention will teach Douglas County residents about common scams today and how to stay safe.

The event is co-hosted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and SecureU, Central Bank’s fraud prevention program. Sheriff Jay Armbrister will discuss types of scams to look out for and how to safeguard from them.

“These cases are heartbreaking to work, and the scams have become much more sophisticated in recent years,” Armbrister said in a news release. “We know that seniors especially are targets for these types of scams, so we appreciate the opportunity to talk about prevention tactics and ways to help everyone in our community.”

The Central Bank SecureU team will guide attendees on how to protect their financial information “from spotting suspicious requests to safeguarding your accounts,” according to the release.

“The best defense against scams is knowing what to look for,” said Lyn Arce, manager of Central Bank’s Ninth and Kentucky branch. “By partnering with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, we’re combining law enforcement insight with our own financial security expertise to give our neighbors in Lawrence the tools they need to protect themselves and their families.”

Presenters will distribute fraud prevention handouts at the end of the event, as well.

The free presentation goes from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18, and appetizers and refreshments will be available starting at 5:30 p.m. It will be held at the Jayhawk Welcome Center at the University of Kansas, 1266 Oread Ave.

People can park at the Mississippi Street Parking Garage, across the street to the west of the welcome center.
