Members of Lawrence’s sustainability advisory board are compiling environmental policy proposals to share with city commissioners, and they’re asking for community members to put in their two cents.
Folks can weigh in through written or in-person public comment during the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board meeting Thursday.
Board members will be considering the list of policy recommendations at this link. They drafted the list to decide which ones to advance to the commission. The list has ideas for investing in infrastructure, like putting solar panels on city buildings; public education; and ordinances aimed at improving the climate, such as a styrofoam ban.
The document also highlights environmentally friendly state legislation commissioners can advocate for.
Board members resolved during their June meeting to present two lists to the city commission. One will include their full collection of ideas, while another will be winnowed down and ranked by priority. (Read more about the June meeting in this article.)
Ultimately, the board would like the city commission to implement some of the selected programs or initiatives, or fold them into the upcoming strategic plan.
Meeting and public comment info
The Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 23 at City Hall, 6 E. Sixth St. See the full meeting agenda at this link. ESAB meetings are also livestreamed via the city’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/@lawrenceksvideo.
The board will accept written public comment emailed to [email protected] until noon the day of the meeting. The board will also hear live public comment during the meeting, both in person and virtually. People can attend virtually by registering via Zoom.
Advisory board members are volunteers appointed by city commissioners.
