Sunflowers are lifting their heads to the sky at Grinter Farms in Douglas County. Folks can enjoy the fields without paying admission charges, although donations are welcome.
Grinter’s is a corn and soybean farm, but farmers started planting sunflowers in the 1970s to try to produce biodiesel. Now, those locally famous yellow petals are located at 24050 Stillwell Road, north of Lawrence.
Grinter Farms posted its annual list of rules, tips and disclaimers on its Facebook page.
Among them: There will never be restrooms and, no, tractors don’t have bathrooms; “If you lost something in the field and it’s big enough to damage a combine…find it!”; keep dogs leashed and use doggy doo bags; there are no trash cans; and avoid parking on the street. And of course, “The best sunflower is one not picked.”
The field does not have business hours, per the post, but they ask people who are up to shenanigans after dark to “Go on, now, git!”
Also, since their sunflowers are a crop for the farm, they discourage “drawing” on the seed heads, which damages them.
Admission is free, though donations are welcome, especially from professional photographers profiting off of the location.
