People can catch a sneak preview of a local film about Eddy Martinez, a Lawrence Transit bus driver, while enjoying live poetry and bus stop artwork at an upcoming event.
The event, “Art in Motion: An Evening of Film, Poetry & Transit,” will start at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St. It is free and open to the public.
“The Name for Blue,” directed by Marc Havener, will be a centerpiece of the evening. The 10-minute film explores why Martinez loves his job and people he meets.
“Convinced that a name is what makes a stranger visible, Eddy Martinez has spent years learning every regular on his Lawrence, Kansas bus route by name,” a city news release reads.
Havener said in an arts center news release that he rode Martinez’s route for three days with a camera.
“He emits love and clarity. I don’t have a better word for it, and I watched it work on people,” Havener said in the release. “In three days I saw humor, drama, romance, boredom, triumph and transcendence.”
Doors open at 6 p.m. Saturday with poetry on the arts center’s main stage. At 6:30 p.m., City Manager Majed Al-Ghafry will give opening remarks before the film screening.
Havener and Martinez will participate in a Q&A at 6:50 p.m., followed by a reception with free refreshments and downtown loop bus rides starting at 7:15 p.m. Folks can view bus stop artwork in the arts center lobby throughout the evening.
The event is co-hosted by the city, Lawrence Transit, eXplore Lawrence and the arts center.
