Investigators are looking into the cause of a small fire Saturday morning at Liberty Hall in downtown Lawrence.
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical first responders received the call just after 10 a.m. Saturday.
A custodian opening the business had arrived and discovered smoke, LDCFM Battalion Chief Brandon Holloman said in an emailed statement.
Medics arrived first and found heavy smoke in the basement of the building, at 644 Massachusetts St. Engine 1 then arrived; firefighters deployed a hose into the basement and located a small fire that was quickly extinguished with a water can, Holloman said.
“Light smoke was found on all floors and the building was ventilated,” he said. “… No fire alarms were sounding and no sprinklers were present in the basement. Kansas Department Of Agriculture was also notified due to the presence of food in the concessions area.”
As of shortly after noon Saturday, a fire investigator was still at the scene, according to LDCFM’s PulsePoint app.
Holloman said the cause of the fire was still under investigation, and no injuries were reported.
