New director opens Lawrence Community Shelter as weather emergency shelter during 100-degree days
As the season’s first heat advisory goes into effect Monday and temps hit 100°, people living outside will be able to seek refuge at the Lawrence Community Shelter. That’s one of many changes under the new director’s watch.

Trees damaged, power out for many in Lawrence and Douglas County after severe windstorm
Numerous trees were damaged as a result of a severe storm overnight Saturday into Sunday morning, and a few hundred Evergy customers in the area were without power.
Tornado watch issued for Douglas County, much of eastern Kansas
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for parts of Kansas, including Douglas County, through 5 a.m. Sunday.
Douglas County under tornado watch through late Monday
Douglas County is on the eastern edge of a tornado watch spanning parts of Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska until 11 p.m. Monday.
Lawrence could see severe storms Monday
Douglas County is at an enhanced risk for severe storms Monday, possibly including large hail and damaging winds. There is also a small chance of tornadoes and flooding.
Tornado north of Douglas County was EF1; more stormy weather possible
A tornado that touched down Tuesday night just north of Douglas County was an EF1, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka, and there were no injuries.

A tornado warning was issued for Douglas County as a storm passed through the area Tuesday evening.
Severe storms possible in Douglas County
Severe storms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon, and severe weather is possible for Douglas County Tuesday and over the next few days.
Tornado watch issued for Douglas County; flood watch in effect Saturday
The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a tornado watch for Douglas County, effective through 9 p.m. Friday. Storms are also possible with up to tennis ball-size hail.
Tornadoes, severe storms possible in Lawrence through Saturday
Thunderstorms are expected to continue into Thursday evening across northeastern Kansas, possibly to be followed by severe weather Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.
No damage reported in Douglas County after tornado; wind advisory in effect and storms possible
No damage has been reported to Douglas County Emergency Management after an EF1 tornado nearby early Tuesday, though two people were injured and there was some damage to the southwest of the county.
