Lawrence gets more snow; low chance of winter precipitation forecast for Saturday

A small chance of freezing rain or snow is in the forecast for Saturday after Lawrence received some additional snowfall beginning Thursday night and ending early Friday.

Estimated snowfall amounts Friday has not yet been reported, National Weather Service meteorologist Kyle Poage said, but NWS had forecast that Lawrence could get 1 to 3 inches before sunrise.

Lawrence Municipal Services and Operations is responsible for treating and plowing city streets. A post from the City of Lawrence’s Facebook page on Friday morning said crews worked overnight to begin plowing priority routes and will continue Friday.

Priority first goes to high-traffic areas, such as Iowa and Sixth streets, according to the post. Crews next move to streets like Tennessee Street or Lawrence Avenue that connect to those high traffic areas. They then go to areas surrounding schools before finally addressing residential streets and cul-de-sacs.

A city map shows areas that snowplows and salt trucks have treated and how recently. That’s available at this link.

Poage said there’s currently a 20% chance of more winter precipitation in Lawrence Saturday evening. There were no projections of the amounts yet as of Friday morning.

“Right now it looks like mostly snow, but there also could be some other mixture of precipitation in there, in terms of maybe some rain or even some light freezing rain,” Poage said. “So depending on if we get that and then how much that would be, that could create a problem Saturday evening for travel.”

A low of 13° is forecast for Friday night, with the lowest wind chill at around 5° that night and on Saturday morning. The forecast for Saturday includes a high of 33° and a low of 25°. Wind gusts Saturday morning may get up to 15 mph.
