Post last updated at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, June 12 to add new Lawrence protest details and rideshare info:

Lawrence residents can travel on their own or take a bus ride to the Kansas capitol building as part of nationwide protests Saturday.

“No Kings” is a national day of action against President Donald Trump’s increased authoritarianism and his administration’s and allies’ corruption. A thousand or more protests are planned on Saturday, June 14 — the day of Trump’s 79th birthday and a military parade in D.C.

Organizers with Arc of Justice, a grassroots newsletter for Kansas activism, encourage people from Lawrence to attend the affiliated No Kings protest in Topeka. It’s scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday on the south steps of the Kansas State Capitol, 300 SW 10th Ave.

Someone planned a No Kings protest Saturday afternoon in Lawrence’s South Park, but they canceled it because the park and adjacent street are home to the annual Lawrence Juneteenth celebration, set to continue through 8 p.m. Saturday.

However, a Lawrence protest is now planned from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Buford M. Watson Park (the train park) at 727 Kentucky St. Organizers encourage those who are able to go to the larger gathering in Topeka, however.

Other surrounding cities, including Ottawa, Lenexa, Kansas City and more, are listed on the No Kings map, as well.

For the Topeka protest, the social justice team at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lawrence chartered a 58-person bus. The last bus seat filled up Thursday afternoon. There will be a rideshare available, though. It will be leaving at 1:30 p.m. Saturday from the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. Those who are interested in the rideshare can contact Christina McKenna at krizrose04@gmail.com, 785-337-0556 or via Signal at krizrose.84.

The weekly pro-democracy demonstrations in Lawrence will continue this week, set for noon each Sunday at Ninth and Massachusetts streets and also in South Park.
