Clay Wirestone, Lawrence author and opinion columnist with the Kansas Reflector, is gearing up to celebrate the release of his first book: a look at Kansas journalism and how it’s shaped public discourse in the state.

“Opinionated: Kansas Journalists Who Proved Why Commentary Matters — Then and Now” comes out Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Wirestone will be in conversation with Reflector editor-in-chief Sherman Smith at a launch event from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. that day at the Raven Book Store, 809 Massachusetts St.

The book “takes readers on a tour of Kansas journalism from the 1920s to the 1970s, introducing us to the people who shaped public discourse in the heartland,” according to the jacket copy. “Opinionated” also illuminates why local journalism is essential to democracy, and how aspiring commentators can hone their craft.

In addition to the Raven, folks can get a copy of the book at the Lawrence Public Library or through the publisher, the University Press of Kansas.
