Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.
Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.
Frito is a family-friendly puppy who will sneak into your heart and curl up there for a good snuggle.
“We’ve fostered Frito for the past couple of weeks, and the thing we’ve loved most is how easily he settles into family life,” his foster said. “Within a day, he was riding along for school drop-off, watching TV on the couch, making friends with our dogs, and politely respecting our cats. He’s the kind of dog who quietly becomes part of your family before you even realize it’s happened.”

At 10 months old, pit bull mix Frito has already spent 53 days waiting to be adopted through the humane society. Shelter staff transferred him in from a rural, less resourced shelter where he was at risk of euthanasia.
“At 10 months old, he’s close to full-grown, so what you see is pretty much what you get – a fun-sized best friend,” the foster parent said.
In addition to getting along with cats, kids and other dogs, he’s 99% of the way to being potty-trained. He’s also done fine when kenneled for four to six hours.
His foster family said he’s a classic puppy who loves food and gets a little mouthy, but he’s easy to redirect.

“Basically, he’s a very good boy who mostly has manners but could use just a little finishing,” his foster said.
Frito is a people puppy who loves cuddles in front of a TV. He does well on a leash and on car rides.
His adoption fee is $150. Potential adopters can email to [email protected] or call the shelter at 785-843-6835 to arrange a meeting.
