Here’s a quick roundup of closures, changes, celebrations and more for the Fourth of July holiday in Lawrence:
• Parking at meters, lots and in garages in downtown Lawrence will be free Friday and Saturday, July 3 and 4.
• The East Lawrence and Holcom Park recreation centers, Community Building, Sports Pavilion Lawrence, and Prairie Park Nature Center will be closed Saturday, July 4. Lawrence Parks and Recreation administrative offices and cemetery offices will be closed Friday and Saturday.
• Solid waste collection will occur following the regular schedule and will not be delayed this year. However, there will be no bulk pickup, roll-off service or cart maintenance on Friday, the Household Hazardous Waste Facility will be closed Friday, and the Compost Facility will be closed Saturday.

• Lawrence Transit: Bus routes 1-12 and Route 45 will operate on Friday, July 3, and there will be extended service until 1 a.m. on Route 4. Routes 1-12 will run a reduced schedule, and Central Station will be closed. There will be no public transit service on Saturday, July 4, and the station will be closed. • The Outdoor Aquatic Center will be open from 1 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
• The Indoor Aquatic Center will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. for competition pool lap swim on Friday. It will be closed on Saturday. There will be no aquatic fitness or instructional classes on the holiday; they will be held on Friday.
• Eagle Bend Golf Course will be open from 7 a.m. until dark on Saturday, July 4.
• The Lawrence Public Library will be closed Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5. However, the online library is open 24/7.
• Douglas County District Court will be closed Friday.
• City of Lawrence and Douglas County offices will be closed Friday.
• Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center will be closed Friday. If you or someone you know needs crisis care, call HeadQuarters Kansas at 988. The Treatment and Recovery Center of Douglas County at 1000 W. Second St. is available 24/7/365.
Local celebrations
• The Lawrence City Band’s free weekly concert will have the theme of “Celebrating America’s Sequicentennial.” That’s set to start at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 1 at South Park. In the event of inclement weather, updates will be posted on the band’s Facebook page at facebook.com/LawrenceCityBand.
• The second annual July 4th Freedom Fest will highlight past progress toward ensuring civil rights in America, as well as the work that lies ahead. That’s set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 4 on the east side of South Park; read more in this article.
• The City of Lawrence’s Summerfest, which will include a drone show, is set for 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 4 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Read more about the event at this link.
• Eudora’s Star-Spangled Celebration is set for 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 4 in the Eudora High School parking lot at 2203 Church St.
