An original production in Lawrence will encapsulate the essence of Juneteenth — Black liberation amid racial injustice.
Lawrence playwright and director Rita Rials pulled from her own ancestry to create “Panther Burn: From the Fields of Struggle to the Road of Hope.”
“Based on the true story of her family’s migration from Mississippi to Kansas, ‘Panther Burn’ shares an inspiring journey of fleeing racial injustice in the pursuit of equal rights and economic opportunity,” according to the event synopsis.
Cast members include Nicole Rials, Greg Lange, Christian Franklin, Tay’Jah Franklin, Eugene Miles, Sasha Rials, Ida Meacham and Monica Tyrrell.
“Panther Burn” is set to premiere at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive in Lawrence. Tickets are free and don’t need to be reserved.
Local businesses will be set up when doors open at 6 p.m. and after the show. The vendors lined up are KC’s Gifts and Surprises, Victoria the Real Barbee, Diamoneer by Ginger and Aisha Imani Sanaa.
The stage play is the seventh installment in a partnership between Life Restoration Ministries (LRM) Foundation Theatre and the Lied Center.
