Lawrence Humane Pet of the Week: This girl, Scout, is the only Caramel deLite you need

Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.

Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.

Scout, a 2-year-old pitbull mix, loves to play tug-of-war and fetch with her human. But she can make do on her own.

“She’ll toss toys in the air for herself and then go catch them,” wrote Elina Alterman, the humane society’s chief development officer.

Scout was surrendered to the shelter in October through no fault of her own, and she’s been seeking a home for seven months.

She spent a couple months in foster care but returned to the shelter, and staff said they’re getting increasingly desperate to find her another place to stay that isn’t a kennel.

Folks on Mass Street Mutts outings say she’s playful and clumsy, curious and attentive. She knows commands like sit, shake and fetch and could be trained to learn more, thanks to her high treat motivation.

Scout is a people lover and class A snuggle bug.

“She enjoys being active so is a fan of walks and would be happy to be someone’s running buddy if one is so inclined,” Alterman wrote. “But she’s also happy having zoomies in the backyard!”

Scout is kennel- and house-trained. She also does well in the car and on a leash. She needs to be the only pet in a home due to past trauma, but she is not reactive to other dogs when on walks and adventures. She would prefer older, calmer kids because she can get scared of younger, more active children.

Scout is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Her adoption fee is typically $150. Through Sunday, May 31, all dogs’ adoption fees at LHS are discounted to $25.
